Vaginal Infections (Vaginitis)

Vaginal infections commonly cause itching, burning, pain during urination or sex, and unusual vaginal discharge (which may be thick white or thin yellow/green). Other symptoms can include vulvar swelling, redness, irritation, and small skin cracks.

If left untreated, some infections may lead to ongoing discomfort and more serious complications.

Common Symptoms

Itching and Burning

  • Strong irritation in or around the vagina and vulva

Discharge Changes

  • Thick, white, “cottage cheese-like” discharge (often seen with yeast infections)
  • Thin, fishy-smelling white or grey discharge (often seen with bacterial vaginosis)

Painful Symptoms

  • Burning during urination
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

Inflammation and Irritation

  • Redness and swelling of vaginal tissues
  • Small skin fissures or irritation of the labia

Possible Long-Term Effects (If Untreated)

  • Increased infection risk: Some infections can make it easier to contract STIs
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Certain untreated infections may spread to the uterus and fallopian tubes
  • Fertility problems: PID can sometimes lead to infertility or chronic pelvic pain
  • Pregnancy complications: Some infections are linked to preterm birth or low birth weight
